While coaching is indeed a popular trend, mentorship offers a unique, more holistic approach to personal and professional development. Mentorship involves a deeper, long-term relationship that focuses on the overall growth of the mentee, rather than just achieving specific goals. Mentorship allows for the transfer of not only skills and knowledge but also wisdom and experience, fostering a richer and more meaningful learning journey. It creates a legacy of knowledge and guidance that can profoundly impact individuals and communities.
The journey began with a wealth of ideas and events that served as a beacon guiding us to this book. At the end of 2021, Fathia El-Dakhakhni presented a project sponsored by the American Embassy in Cairo aimed at training and qualifying a number of experts in the field of career mentoring. Joseph Makar was one of the participants in this training program, which indeed proved to be highly engaging. Given that the concept of mentorship is relatively new and lacks comprehensive training manuals or robust academic content, the instructors and project team made considerable efforts to convey the idea and rely on content that would help participants gain a deeper understanding and provide recommendations on professional mentoring practices.
Before concluding the training program, Joseph Makar proposed the idea of providing effective tools for career mentors to apply their work scientifically and practically based on principles. Fathia El-Dakhakhni contributed to the idea, and together they implemented and designed the Mentorship Toolkit as an attempt to enrich the knowledge and skills associated with the concept of mentoring. Fathia and Joseph based the design of these tools on exploring the various stages at which a career mentor interacts with mentees. Mentees might seek mentorship at the early stages of their professional development, after acquiring different experiences, when they need to step out of their comfort zone, or when they need to reassess their career path after making significant progress.
The efforts did not stop with these tools. In a commendable initiative, Dr. Mai Mowafy enriched the idea further by proposing the creation of a distinguished academic framework. This framework would be the first academic content on career mentoring in Arabic, providing many career mentors and consultants in various fields with a practical reference. This would add a strong academic foundation to mentoring practices, making it easier for mentors to offer professional advice and guidance based on solid scientific background. We started working on this framework in the second half of 2023. At the outset, Dalia Yousry joined us, bringing her professional experience in developing informational and professional skills for various individuals throughout her career, adding a practical aspect grounded in diverse professional experiences.
The team united around a single idea and a shared vision, resulting in a pioneering professional endeavor that is innovative in its application. This collaboration effectively contributes to shaping the concept of career mentoring, forming the cornerstone for anyone seeking to transfer their professional expertise and skills to others in need of advice, guidance, and professional development.
Publishing the book in Arabic was a deliberate choice to address a significant gap in the market. While there is an abundance of career development and business literature in English, Arabic-speaking professionals often have limited access to such resources in their native language. By publishing in Arabic, we aim to make the concepts of mentorship accessible to a broader audience and to support the development of Arabic-speaking professionals. This also helps in preserving and promoting the Arabic language in the context of modern professional development.
Writing this book presented several challenges. Firstly, there was the task of distilling complex concepts into clear and engaging content. Ensuring that the book was both informative and accessible was crucial. Secondly, translating nuanced ideas about mentorship into Arabic required careful consideration to maintain the integrity and impact of the message. Additionally, coordinating the efforts of a diverse team of contributors posed logistical challenges, from aligning schedules to harmonizing different writing styles and perspectives.
The teamwork process was incredibly enriching. Each member of the team brought unique insights and expertise, which added depth and breadth to the book. We operated in a collaborative environment, where ideas were freely shared, and constructive feedback was encouraged. Regular meetings and clear communication channels were essential to keep everyone aligned and motivated. The collaborative nature of our work mirrored the mentorship principles we advocate, fostering a supportive and productive atmosphere.
Our target audience includes young professionals, aspiring leaders, educators, and anyone interested in personal and professional development. The book is also valuable for organizations looking to implement mentorship programs. This book is important to the community because it provides a framework for nurturing talent and fostering growth. By promoting mentorship, we aim to cultivate a culture of continuous learning and development, which can lead to more robust and resilient communities and organizations.
The book serves as a foundational resource that complements the mentorship section on our website. The website offers additional tools, articles, and interactive content that expand on the book’s themes. Together, they provide a comprehensive mentorship ecosystem, where readers can continue their learning journey, connect with potential mentors, and access ongoing support and guidance. The integration of the book and the website ensures that the principles of mentorship are reinforced and accessible in various formats.
Certainly! Here’s a teaser from the book:
